(Washington, DC) – The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) today announced that on Friday, August 22, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Councilmember Harry “Tommy” Thomas, Jr., DPR Director Clark E. Ray, DC Sports and Entertainment Commission Chief Executive Officer Erik A. Moses, and representatives from Comcast and Verizon will be on hand to celebrate the “Summer Olympics,” an end of the season competitive sports event sponsored by the Summer Explorers of Washington, DC. The event will be held from 10 am to 3 pm at the Fort Lincoln Recreation Center, 3100 Fort Lincoln Road, NE.
The Summer Explorers of Washington, DC, a component of the Youth Technology Institute, is a cultural enrichment camp for youth. This year, participants “explored” the USA, France, China, Brazil, Nigeria and Scotland through activities centered on these countries. The Youth Technology Institute has been a partner of DPR for the past two years.
“What better way to culminate a summer full of cultural and sports enrichment other than riding on the Olympic spirit,” said DPR Director Clark E. Ray. “I commend our partner, the Youth Technology Institute, for giving our children a global perspective through their activities and reinforcing that being world-class champions starts right here in the District of Columbia.”
Campers also participated in arts and crafts activities, reinforced their math skills using currency from each country, learned science experiments conducted by Mad Science, kept journals as well as listened to stimulating presentations by guest speakers from Nigeria and Brazil.
According to Erik A. Moses, DC Sports and Entertainment Commission chief executive officer, “It’s great to see local youngsters embrace the essence of the Olympics this summer. We hope that these games will further show our young people how athletic competition can inspire the athletes, spectators and our broader communities.”
